Choosing what to wear for your newborn family photos does not have to feel stressful. With a few thoughtful choices, you can create a look that feels natural, timeless, and beautifully suited to your family.
One of the number one questions I get asked before a newborn session is:
“What should we wear?”
And I get it—you're freshly postpartum, adjusting to life with a brand new baby, probably running on very little sleep… and now you’re expected to coordinate outfits for your entire family?
Take a breath—I’ve got you.
The truth is, styling your newborn session doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, when done right, it becomes one of the most important parts of creating those soft, timeless, emotional images you’ll treasure forever.
In my studio, I offer a variety of different setups and backdrops—each with its own feel and intention.
From soft neutrals to textured looks like white brick or cozy lifestyle bed setups, each one tells a slightly different story.
Because of that, what you wear should work with the space, not against it.
Think of your session like a piece of art being created—every detail matters, and your wardrobe plays a huge role in the final look.
When in doubt, lean into neutrals and soft tones.
Creams, beiges, light grays, soft blush, muted earth tones—these photograph beautifully and keep the focus exactly where it should be: on your baby and your connection as a family.
There’s a reason photographers recommend this so often—neutral tones help create cohesive, timeless galleries and prevent distractions.
Trendy colors and loud patterns may feel fun in the moment, but they don’t always age well in your images.
And these photos? They’re meant to last.
You don’t need everyone in identical outfits (please don’t do that 😅).
Instead, aim for coordinating tones.
Think:
Limit your palette to about 2–4 colors so everything feels cohesive without looking overly styled.
The goal is effortless, not forced.
I know this season can feel vulnerable.
Your body has just done something incredible—and you might not quite feel like yourself yet.
But hear me when I say this:
you deserve to be in these photos.
Choose something:
Long dresses photograph beautifully, especially when seated or holding baby.
And if you’re unsure? I’m always here to help guide you.
Keep it simple.
For dads:
For siblings:
The goal is always the same: nothing should pull attention away from baby.
One of the biggest stress relievers for my clients is this:
You don’t need to worry about baby’s wardrobe.
I provide:
Everything is chosen to match beautifully and photograph safely and intentionally.
You’re always welcome to bring something sentimental—but it’s never required.
Think about where your photos will live.
Are you planning to hang them in your home?
If so, consider colors that will complement your space—this helps your images feel like they truly belong in your life, not just on a screen.
These photos aren’t just about outfits.
They’re about:
Styling simply helps bring that story to life in the most beautiful, cohesive way possible.
And the best part?
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
I’m here to guide you every step of the way—so you can walk into your session feeling confident, prepared, and excited.
The backdrops I offer in addition to my full lifestyle set.
Styling doesn’t have to be stressful—and with the right guidance, it becomes part of the magic. I’m here to help every step of the way so your session feels effortless and intentional.
I can't wait to make gorgeous memories for your family!
