Why Your Photographer’s Style Matters

When you hire a photographer, you’re not just booking a session — you’re trusting someone to see you through their own creative lens. Photography is art, and art is subjective. What speaks to one person might not resonate with another, and that’s okay. I actually think that’s part of what makes photography so special.

Every photographer sees things differently. The way we use light, color, composition, posing, styling, editing, and all of the little details that go into a session are what make our work our own. Over time, those choices become a photographer’s style, and that style is a big part of what you are hiring.

For me, that means creating timeless, natural images with vintage touches, whimsy, and a whole lot of color. I love warmth, texture, movement, and images that feel alive. I want my work to have personality and emotion while still feeling like something you will love years from now.

That also means I don’t necessarily follow every photography trend just because it is popular.

Let’s talk about the all-white look.

You have probably seen it everywhere lately — creamy neutrals, white dresses, white backdrops, very bright and minimal images. And there are photographers who do that style beautifully. It just isn’t really how I see things.

And to be clear, this isn’t about me refusing to use white. I do use white when it works with the overall look of a session. What I rarely do is the very stark, all-white aesthetic where the entire image is intentionally stripped of color and contrast. That simply isn’t representative of my work.

I gravitate toward warmth, color, texture, and layers because I think those things add something to an image. They give it dimension. They help tell the story. They let an image feel like you instead of feeling like whatever happens to be trending at the moment.

That is why I think it is so important to look at a photographer’s entire portfolio when you are choosing someone. Not just one image you love. Not just one setup you saw on Pinterest. Look through their galleries and ask yourself if you would be happy receiving an entire gallery that looks and feels like their work.

Do you love the way they use light? Their editing? Their colors? The way they pose people? The way they style their sessions? Most importantly, do you love the overall feeling of their images?

Because if you find yourself looking at a photographer’s work and thinking, “I love this, but I want my session to look like this completely different photographer,” that might be a sign that their style simply isn't the right fit for what you are envisioning. And that is completely okay. There is a photographer for every style.

I absolutely love when clients send inspiration. It helps me understand what they are drawn to, and it can give me ideas for colors, textures, poses, or little details they might love. But I see inspiration as a starting point, not a request to recreate someone else’s work.

When you hire me, I want to take the things that matter to you and create them through my artistic lens. Your family should still look like your family. Your session should still feel personal. But the finished images should also look like something I created.

Because you hired me for my work.

I think that is an important part of the relationship between a photographer and a client. You bring your story, your personalities, your ideas, and the things that make your family yours. I bring my experience, my creativity, and the way I see the world.

That is where the magic happens.

You aren’t hiring a photographer to become someone else. You’re hiring them because you already connected with the way they create.

So before you book your next photographer, don’t just ask yourself, “Can they do this?”

Ask yourself, “Do I love the way they see?”

Because photography is art. And art is meant to have a point of view.
